Navratri festival is a Hindu festival which is celebrated throughout India. In southern part of India this festival is celebrated for 9 days. The Goddess is Durga. Every day one variety of Sundal is offered to Goddess. Here is a Navaratri Special Navadhanya Sundal which can be served at end of the festival.
For boiling navathaniyam [9 Grains]
- Chickpeas [kondai kadalai] – 3 tbsp
- Horse gram [kollu] – 3 tbsp
- Peanut [Nilakadalai, verkadalai] – 3 tbsp
- Green gram [pachai payaru] – 3 tbsp
- Red kidney beans [Rajma, sigappu beans] – 3 tbsp
- Cowpeas [thatta payir] – 3 tbsp
- Black kidney beans [Black turtle bean] – 3 tbsp
- Black-eyed peas [black eyed beans, karamani, vellai karamani] – 3 tbsp
- Green peas [pachai pattani] – 3 tbsp
For Seasoning [Ingredients]
- Mustard seed - 1 tbsp
- Urad dal - 1 tbsp
- Bengal gram - 1 tbsp
- Green chilli - 1 [sliced or chopped]
- Coconut - ¼ cup [grated]
- Curry leaves - 1 spring
- Lemon juice - ½ tbsp
- Asafetida - a pinch
- Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
- Red chilli powder - ½ tbsp
- Jaggery - ½ tbsp [grated]
- Salt to taste
- Oil- 3 tbsp
Method
- Wash & soak chickpeas, green peas, red kidney beans, horse gram, black-eyed peas, cowpeas, black kidney beans overnight.
- Heat pressure cooker add soaked grains, green gram, ground nut, turmeric powder & water, cover it & cook for 4 whistles. Then drain water.
- Heat pan with oil then add mustard seeds & let its splutter.
- Add Asafetida, Bengal gram, urad dal & sauté gently.
- Add grated coconut, green chilli & curry leaves saute gently.
- Now add turmeric powder, red chilli powder then add boiled navathaniyam [9 grains] & mix
Add jaggery & mix well. - Add lemon juice and chopped coriander leaves serve hot.
