Main ingredients
- Chow chow[seema kathirikai] –10
- sambar Onion – 6
- Garlic - 3 cloves
- Tomato - 1 [chopped]
- Fenugreek seeds - 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
- Bengal gram– ½ tbsp
- Urad dal– ½ tbsp
- Curry leaves – 1 spring
- Red chilli powder – ½ tbsp
- Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
- Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
- Jaggery - 1 tbsp
- Tamarind water - 4 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Sesame Oil – 3 tbsp
- Water As needed
ingredients for roasting and grinding
- Dry Red chilli-1
- Coconut – 2 tbsp [grated]
- Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tbsp
- Bengal gram– 1 tbsp
- Urad dal– 1 tbsp
- Peppercorns - 1/2 tbsp
- * Heat pan with oil roast all ingredients then grind to fine paste
Method
- Dry roast fenugreek seeds & coarsely grind
- Heat 2 tbsp sesame oil in a pan , add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, Bengal gram and urad dal.
- Add curry leaves, asafoetida, garlic, onion & sauté well
- Add fenugreek powder saute.
- Add tomato saute till soft.
- Add chow chow, turmeric, red chilli powder saute.
- Then add water, cook till soft.
- Add ground paste & water mix well let it boil.
- Add tamarind water & salt let it boil
- Add jaggery mix well let it boil for 2 min.
- Then cut off heat, serve hot with rice, idly, dosa.
How to make Chow chow kara kuzhambu - Step by step [Simple, Authentic]
In a mixie jar, add roasted ingredients in a mixie jar, grind to fine paste
Ground mixture ready
Soak tamarind for 5 min
Heat 2 tbsp oil, add mustard, urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves, onion & asafoetida
Add fenugreek seeds
Add chow chow, turmeric powder & red chilli pwoder saute for 3 min
Add tomato saute till soft
Add water, cook till soft
Add ground mixture
Add tamarind water, let it boil till raw smell out
Add salt
Add jaggery
Let it boil for 3 min
Now its ready, cut off heat
