Simple kalan recipe-Kerala special raw banana coconut curry-How to make-Step by step photos

Ingredients
- Raw banana – 1 [Peel off the skin, cut into cubes]
- Curd - ¼ cup [fully whisked]
- Coconut - ½ cup [Grated]
- Peppercorns - 6
- Cumin seeds - 1 tbsp
- Fenugreek seeds- ½ tbsp
- Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
- Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
- Dry red chilli - 2
- Green chilli - 2
- Mustard Seed - 1 tbsp
- Curry leaves - 1 spring
- Asafetida a pinch
- Salt to taste
- Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
- Water as needed
Preparation
- Heat water in a broad pan & let it boil, then add raw banana, turmeric powder, salt & parboil [¾ th cook]. Then drain water & keep it aside.
- Add grated coconut, cumin seeds, curd, & green chilli in a mixer jar & grind fine paste with ½ cup of water.
- Dry roast fenugreek seeds, cool it & grind to fine powder. Dry roast peppercorns & grind to fine powder.
- Heat coconut oil in a pan, add mustard seeds & let it splutter. Then add curry leaves & red chilli fry for a min.
- Add asafetida & fenugreek powder sauté. Then add boiled raw banana, turmeric & red chilli powder sauté.
- Add pepper powder, ground mixture, salt mix well, cover it & let it boil. Add water if required.
- Then cut off heat, serve hot with rice.
Tip
- Use coconut oil for better flavor.

Peel off the raw banana skin, cut into cubes, then boil with salt & turmeric powder
Once boiled drain water
Add grated coconut, curd, cumin seeds & green chilli grind well with 1 cup of water
After grinding
Dry roast fenugreek seeds
After grinding-fenugreek powder
Freshly ground pepper powder
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds & let it splutter
Add curry leaves
Add asafetida
Add dry red chilli
Add fenugreek powder saute
Add boiled raw banana, turmeric and red chilli powder saute
Add pepper powder saute
Add freshly ground coconut mixture, add water if required
Add salt mix well & let it boil
Once boiled cut off heat
Traditional kalan recipe is ready
Raw banana coconut curry- serve hot with rice
