Moong dal chilla / cheela/ dosa is simple, healthy and instant breakfast recipe. This is crispy and protein packed. Only 2 main ingredients & little bit seasoning will give perfect thin dosa. I have used my garden organic moong dal with skin. You can use yellow moong dal without skin. You can add any toppings.
Ingredients
- Moong dal with green skin/ yellow moong dal- 1 cup
- Rice - 1/4 cup
- Ginger - 1 piece (1 inch peeled)
- Green Chili - 3
- Coriander leaves - 2 springs
- Curry leaves - 1 spring
- Cumin Seeds - 1 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Oil - 2 tbsp
- Water as needed
Preparation
- Wash & soak moong dal for 4 to 5 hours. Then drain water.
- Put soaked moong dal , rice, green chilli, ginger, cumin seeds, curry & coriander leaves in a grinder or mixer jar then finely grind with enough water.
- In a bowl add ground batter mixture, salt mix well.
- Heat iron dosa tawa, pour batter & evenly spread to round shape.
- Then pour 1 tbsp of oil around the dosa cover lid & cook it for 3 minutes (medium flame).
- Flip over and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Then serve hot with coconut chutney.
Tips and variations
- You can ferment batter & make soft moong dal idli also.
- You can skip rice
- You can make ragi moong dal chilla, rava moong dal chilla, atta moong dal chilla or egg moong dal chilla
- You can make onion moong dal chilla
- For paneer moong dal cheela add paneer bhuji or simple seasoned paneer
- For another variation you can make cheese moong dal chilla
- For pizza moong dal cheela:-Heat iron taw, pour batter, evenly spread, add pizza sauce, cheese, onion, capsicum, pizza seasoning & chilli flakes.
- For tomato moong dal cheela add ground tomato puree
- For spinach moong dal chilla:-Ground spinach & green chilli then add into batter, make cheela
- For sago moong dal idli :-Add soaked sago, eno fruit salt in this batter, you can make super soft sago moong dal idli
- You can make poha moong dal idli, semiya moong dal idli or oats moong dal idli
- You can make moong dal paniyaram, paddu or appam
- For sweet moong dal paniyaram, dont ad salt, ginger, green chilli & cumin. Add coconut, cardamom,& jaggery
How to make Moong dal chilla- Step by step photos
Take 1 cup moong dal [You can use yellow moong dal without skin]
In a bowl add moong dal
Add rice
Wash and sok it for 4 to 5 hours
After 5 hours
Soaked moongdal ready
Put moong dal and rice in a mixer ar/ blender
Add ginger
add cumin seeds
Add salt
Add green chilli
Coarsely grind
Add water, grind to fine batter
Batter is ready
Transfer batter to a bowl
Add water if required
Heat iron dosa taw, pour batter, evenly spread
Pour 1 tbsp oil around the dosa
Cover lid, cook for 2 min
Flip over
cook both sides till crisp
Now its ready, remove it from oil
Crispy moong dal chilla ready
Serve hot with raita / chutney
