Avarakkai [Broad beans] is simple and healthy curry for Rice, idli, dosa or uthappam. Broad beans contians vitamin c & k. Reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, & helpful in weight loss. Rich in fibre, iron, potassium, zinc, copper & protein. Best for healthy heart.

How to make Avarakkai arachu vitta kuzhambu [Village style] video

Main ingredients

  • Avarakkai [Broad beans, fava beans]– 1/4 kg
  • Onion – 1 big [sliced]
  • Tomato - 2
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Bengal gram– ½ tbsp
  • Urad dal– ½ tbsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Red chilli powder – ½ tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Tamarind water - 1/4 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 3 tbsp
  • Water As needed

ingredients for roasting and grinding

  • Sambar onion – 6 to 7
  • Red chilli- 1
  • Garlic - 4 cloves
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece
  • Tomato – 2
  • Coconut – 3 tbsp [grated]
  • Cumin, coriander, pepper, fennel, cinnamon - 1 tbsp [each]
  • * Heat pan with oil roast all ingredients, put it in a mixie jar, then grind to fine paste with 1/2 cup of water

Method

  • Heat pan with oil then add mustard seeds, bengal gram and urad dal.
  • Add onion, curry leaves, avarakkai [broad beans], turmeric, red chilli powder saute for 3 min
  • Add tomato saute till soft
  • Add ground paste, add water mix well. Cover it and cook.
  • Add taamrind water, let it boil for 5 min
  • Once its ready, cut off heat, serve hot with rice, idly, dosa.
