Mochakottai puli kuzhambu |Avarekalu tamarind curry-How to make-Step by step photos

Ingredients
- Mochakottai [Field beans, Lima Beans] – 1 cup [fresh]
- Tamarind extract – ½ cup or tamarind paste – 2 tbsp or Tamarind - Lemon size ball [Soak tamarind in warm water for 5 min then squeeze, filter & Extract]
- Fenugreek seeds – 1 tbsp
- Curry leaves – 1 spring
- Coriander leaves – 1 spring [finely chopped]
- Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
- Urad dal – ½ tbsp
- Bengal gram – ½ tbsp
- Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
- Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
- Fenugreek seeds - 1 tbsp
- Asafetida a pinch
- Gingelly oil[Til oil, sesame oil, nalla ennai] – 2 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
For roasting & grinding ingredients
- Dry red chilli – 2 or 3
- Coconut – 2 tbsp [grated]
- Coriander seeds - ½ tbsp
- Peppercorns- ½ tbsp
- Urad dal – ½ tbsp
- Bengal gram – ½ tbsp
- Sambar onion– 6
- Garlic– 3
- Heat oil in a pan then roast above ingredients & grind to fine paste with ½ cup of water.
Method
- Heat water in a pan & let it boil. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder salt & field beans cook till soft.
- Dry roast fenugreek seeds, let it cool, grind to fine powder.
- Heat oil in a pan , add mustard, chana dal, urad dal, hing, curry leaves, & fenugreek powder saute
- Add boiled field beans,ground paste, water, mix well & let it boil.
- Add turmeric, red chilli powder let it boil
- Add tamarind water, & salt let it for 5 min.
- Finally add 1 tbsp sesame oil& cut off heat. Serve hot with rice
Note
- Don’t pressure cook nuts because it loses nutrient values.
How to make Mochakottai puli kulambu-Step by step photos
Mochakottai-Avarekalu-Val beans-Butter Bean
Boil field beans with turmeric, red chilli powder, salt added water till soft.
Dry roast fenugreek, grind to fine powder
Add chana dal, urad dal, peppercorns, coriander
Add dry red chilli saute till light brown
add sambar onion, garlic saute
Add coconut, saute till soft
Add sauted ingredients in a mixer jar, grind to fine paste
Ground paste ready
Heat oil add mustard, urad al, chana dal, curry leaves, asafoetida
Add fenugreek powder saute for 2 min
Add mochakottai
Saute for 2 min
add ground paste
Add turmeric powder
Add salt & water let it boil
Add tamarind water, let it boil for 5 min
Add red chilli powder
Let it boil for 2 min
Mochakottai puli kulambu ready
Cut off heat
Serve hot with rice, pongal, upma, idli or dosa
