Many of us would not have heard of this term, Kamarkattu. This is Tamilnadu Traditional Sweet. Yes we can call it as an Indian Sweet for you convenience. Only two ingredients - Grated coconut & Jaggery make this sweet so yummy & tasty. Lot of patience and keen interest needed to make this recipe. After couple of attempts you could also become the expert in making this Indian Chocolate.
“Dad, I want ‘Diary Milk’ Chocolate” – I am not surprised to listen to this dialogue but I got bored. Just lost in my old memories and was thinking what I ate when was a small boy. Those days there were no these many varieties of chocolates. Only once I tasted chocolate and that too my uncle had bought it from US. The remaining school days gone with ‘MGR Mittai’, “Elantha Vadai’, ‘Kalkona’,’Sooda Mittai’, ‘Then Mittai’, ‘Jav Mittai’ and the last but not least and my favourite one the ‘Kammar Kattu’. I wanted to offer this sweet to my son. I was eager to see his reaction. I went to my favourite outer premises of my old school. I was glad to see the same lady (now granny) and asked her if she could offer the same Kammar Kattu.
She was the one who used to sell these items nearby my school. She replied “No” with sad. I returned home with empty hand. Then I wanted to give a try to make this sweet. I attempted. I tried. I failed. Finally as you would expect I succeeded. It had come out really well almost 99% out of what I expected.
I gently offered this to my son “Hey taste this new Indian Chocolate” He took and started chewing and closed his eyes for some times and said “Woooowwww”.
I am happy that one of my favourite sweets has transferred to the next generation.
Now celebrate happiest moments with Kamarkat.
Now I am bringing back my friends olden glorious memories with Kamarkattu. I offered more than 1000 Kammar Kattu to my friends, relatives and colleagues.
Here are the answers when I asked what was this sweet.
“’Hey’ Sridhar, I know this sweet yar...I was tasting the same flavor when walking on the river bank......hmmmmm...Yes it is Kammar kattu”
“Yes Sridhar, I know...I used to get it in a small shop nearby my school..... Kamarkattu”
“‘Kulumaye’ granny used to sell this near my home...yes...I get one for 5 Paisa...its Kamarkattu”
Almost all found what it was. All lost in their old memories. They became kids for some time.
Wait for more punch and fun.
