Ingredients

  • Yellow pumpkin [Parangikai, arasanikai, kaddu] – 1 cup [cut into circles]
  • Toor dal – ¼ cup
  • Tamarind water – 1/4 cup [soak 1 inch size tamarind in warm water, squeeze &extract water]
  • Tomato – 1 [chopped]
  • Onion [Shallots] - 7
  • Green chilli – 1 [slit]
  • Garlic – 3 cloves
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Coriander leaves – 2 springs [chopped]
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
  • Sambar powder - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Asafetida a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Water as needed

Method

  • Wash toor dal 2 to 3 times.
  • Wash & remove yellow pumpkin then chop.
  • Heat pressure cooker add oil, mustard, chana dal, & urad dal fry for a min.
  • Add fenugreek powder saute for a min
  • Add curry leaves, asafoetida, green chilli, onion, saute well
  • Add garlic, turmeric, red chilli powder, tomato, yellow pumpkin, mix well
  • Add toor dal, saute for a min
  • Add water, cover lid & cook for 3 to 4 whistles.
  • Then add tamarind water, cook for 5 min
  • Add coriander leaves, cut off heat
  • Then serve hot with rice, idli or dosa.

Wash & remove hard skin of pumpkinHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Cut into cubesHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Heat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil, mustard, chana dal, urad dal, asafoetida, green chilli & curry leavesHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Add onion saute till softHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

add roasted fenugreek powder saute for 2 minHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

add tomato, saute till softHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Add yellow pumpkin, red chilli powder, turmeric powder saute for 3 minHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Add toor dal, sambar powderHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Mix wellHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

add 2 cups of water, mix wellHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Cover lid, cook for 4 whistlesHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

4 whistles later, remove steamHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Mash wellHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Add tamarind waterHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Boil for 5 minHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

add coriander leavesHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Now its ready,cut off heatHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Pour into serving bucketHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil

Serve hot wiht rice, idli, dosa or uthappam- arasanikai sambar, parangikai in tamilHeat pressure cooker, add 2 tbsp oil
