Cuisine Style: Tamil Nadu, South India | Cooking Time: 10 minutes | To Serve: 4 | Take with: Idli, Dosa, Rice, Chapathi | Type : Sambar, Gravy, kulambu, curry, masala.

Ingredients

  • Rice– 1 cup
  • Moong dal – 1/4 cup
  • Beetroot- 1 [peel off skin, cut into cubes]
  • Tomato – 1 [chopped]
  • Onion - 1
  • Garlic – 3 cloves
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds– ½ tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Asafetida a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Water - 4 cups

Method

  • Wash rice & soak for 10 min
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker add mustard seeds & cumin seeds..
  • Add onion, garlic, curry leaves, asafoetida & salt mix well.
  • Add beetroot, moong dal, rice, turmeric powder & red chilli powder
  • Add water, & salt mix well, then cover lid & cook for 3 to 4 whistles.
  • After 4 whistles, remove steam, serve hot with ghee, papad or pickle
