Ingredients

  • Mangalore cucumber[Southkayi] -1/2 or 1 cup
  • Thick buttermilk (1/2 cup curd + 1 1/2 cups water)- 2 cups
  • Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  • Ginger-1 inch piece
  • Toor Dal- 1 tsp
  • Rice -1 tsp
  • Green Chillies- 2
  • Coconut - 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

For Tempering

  • Coconut oil/cooking oil- 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves- 1 spring
  • Chana dal - 1 tbsp
  • Urad dal - 1 tbsp
  • Asafoetida- a pinch

Preparation

  • Soak rice and Toor Dal together for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • In a bowl add curd, turmeric & water beat well to make buttermilk, keep it aside.
  • In a mixie jar add soaked dal, rice, cumin seeds, coconut, ginger, green chilli, finely grind
  • Heat coconut oil in a pan, add mustard, chana dal, urad dal, hing, curry leaves, saute
  • Add mangalore cucumber, salt, turmeric cook till soft
  • Add ground mixture, buttermilk mixture cook for 5 min on low -medium flame
  • Once its ready, serve hot with rice
