Ingredients

  • Moong dal[pasi paruppu]- 1 cup
  • Jaggery [vellam]- 3/4 cup to 1 cup
  • Cardamom powder - 1 tbsp
  • Ghee - 2 tbsp
  • Water as needed
  • Idli batter - 1/4 cup

Preparation

  • Dry roast moong dal till light brown
  • Wash moong dal 2 to 3 times then cook till soft
  • Drain excess water , finely grind without water.
  • Heat pan add jaggery & 1/4 cup water cook till syrup consistency.
  • Heat pan add ghee, moong dal mixture, jaggery syrup cook for 5 min
  • Add cardamom powder & roasted coconut, cut off heat.
  • Divide them into equal portions, Then make equal size balls[ladoo] out of it.
  • Heat paniyaram / appam pan, Add 1 tbsp oil & ghee, dip moong dal dal balls in idli batter place it in appam cavity, cook till crisp on both sides.
  • Then serve with tea or coffee

Tip

  • You can use wheat flour batter:-Wheat flour, corn flour, pinch of salt & water
  • You can use simple maida batter also.
  • You can use deep fry method also.
  • You can use peanuts, carrot halwa balls, rava halwa balls& red kidney beans for stuffing.
  • Instead of Jaggery brown sugar or white sugar can be used.
  • If you dont have time, skip soaking process & directly cook in pressure cooker.
  • You can add any almond powder, cahew powder etc.
  • You can use desiccated coconut.
  • You can use paneer, mava, khova, milk cake or oreos in this stuffing.
  • Deep fry method: In case chana dal stuffing is too loose, it will separate in oil but in appam pan method 100 % perfect.
