Simple paruppu sadam


Tamarind Rice

Ingredients

  • Toor dal – ½ cup
  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Sambar onion - 7
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Water as needed

Seasoning ingredients

  • Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tbsp
  • Peppercorns [optional] – 6
  • Dry red chilli - 2
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Bengal gram – ½ tbsp
  • Urad dal – ½ tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 2 tbsp

Method

  • Wash toor dal and rice
  • In a pressure cooker put rice, toor dal, cumin seeds, garlic, sambar onion and turmeric powder. Then add 3 ½ cup water and cover it and cook for 4 whistles.
  • Heat pan with oil add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, Bengal, gram, urad dal, peppercorns, dry red chilli and curry leaves.
  • Add these seasoning ingredients in to cooked rice and add salt mix well.
  • Serve hot with pickle, chutney
