Ingredients

  • Broken red rice [Kerala matta rice] – 1 cup
  • Onion – 1 [sliced or chopped]
  • Carrot – ½ cup [cut into cubes]
  • Potato – ½ cup [cut into small cubes]
  • Tomato – 1 [finely chopped]
  • Coconut – ¼ cup [Thinly sliced & chopped]
  • Green chilli – 1 [slit or chopped]
  • Ginger – 1 tbsp [finely chopped]
  • Coriander leaves – 2 springs [chopped]
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Bengal gram – 1 tbsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tbsp
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed [Apr. 2 ½ cups]

Method

  • Wash & soak broken red rice for ½ an hour. Then drain water. [optional]
  • Heat pressure cooker then add oil. Put mustard seeds& let it splutter. Then add Bengal gram, urad dal sauté gently then add onion sauté well then add ginger, green chilli, curry leaves.
  • Add carrot, potatoes and coconut sauté well. Then add tomato sauté.
  • Add water and salt and mix well. Once water start boiling add broken red rice mix & well then cover it and cook for 5 to 6 whistle.
  • Then add coriander leaves mix well and serve hot with coconut chutney, pickle or chips.

Tip

  • You can add roasted or fried nuts, beans, green peas etc.
